Amritsar, March 15

The problem of water contamination in Bagh Ramanand near the Golden Temple has raised its head once again. Residents say they often receive contaminated water supply but the Municipal Corporation (MC) has failed to come up with a solution.

“Even after replacing the rotten water supply pipelines, the area has been receiving water contaminated by sewage. People residing in the street number five of Bagh Ramanand are the worst sufferers,” they say.

Jagdish Singh, an RTI activist, said, “Despite spending Rs 12 crore in the walled city, the sewerage board has failed to address the water contamination problem. Whenever the problem arises, we complain to MC officials who later claim to have rectified the issue but the the problem reoccurs after sometime.”

He alleged that the sewage pipes were changed two years ago in the adjoining area barring street number 5. “There are over 30 residences in the locality. Residents are forced to drink stinky water. We want permanent solution,” he added.

MC Commissioner Sonali Giri said teams were on job to rectify the problem. “I have directed the officials concerned to look into it to come up with a permanent solution,” she added.

“It has been so long that residents are complaining to the MC for solution to water contamination but to no avail,” said an area resident.
