Villagers catch two thieves

Residents of Bachre village caught two thieves yesterday. One of their accomplices managed to flee along with Rs 1.8 lakh and 34-gm gold ornaments.

The thieves, identified as Baljinder Singh of Master Colony and Sajnay Mahajan of Fatehpur village in Amritsar, have been arrested. Their accomplice, who is at large, is Raju of Fatehpur village.

According to information, the thieves had entered the house of an elderly man, Harbhajan Singh, who was out to attend a function. When Harbhajan Singh returned, the accused were still inside. Upon seeing the lock at the main gate broken and observing suspicious movements inside, he called other villagers who surrounded the house and asked them to come out. Two of them were caught while the third managed to flee somehow. The accused were handed over to the police.

Raju, who fled, managed to take away Rs 1.8 lakh and 34-gm gold ornaments.

ASI Balraj Singh, investigating officer, said the accused were presented in a court and taken on police remand for three days.
