At a time when the Punjabi film industry is preoccupied with the commercially hit romantic-comedy genre, the upcoming movie, ‘Dulla Bhatti’, promises a break with its serious tone tackling revenge and bitterness.

The star cast of the movie, including Binnu Dhillon, Sardar Sohi, Dev Kharoud, Amar Noori, Aman Hundal BN Sharma, Nirmal Rishi and Malkit Rauni, visited the city on a promotional tour for the movie, which is being released on Friday.

Stereotyped in the image of a comedian, Dhillon, at an interaction here today, said, “I was actually looking forward to such a film because it would help me break my image as a comedian.” He said the title of the movie and the character of the protagonist helped him in picking the project.

The title of the movie has been borrowed from Punjabi folklore hero, Dulla Bhatti, often labelled as the ‘Robin Hood of Punjab’. Bhatti had led a revolution against the Mughal rule during the reign of Akbar, primarily because his father was killed by the Mughal rulers.

An adaptation of Dulla Bhatti’s story, the film concentrates on life of the central character played by Dhillon. Dhillon said the film was about a character who witnessed his father’s murder and carried the bitter memory till his moment of revenge. Like the legend, the protagonist also turned the fight from the personal to get the land of local farmers freed from the local landlord. Dhillon said the songs of the movie had already become a hit with the listeners.
