An undertrial lodged in the Central Jail escaped from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital during treatment here on Monday.

The undertrial has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Gurnam Nagar, Sultanwind Road.

The Assistant Superintendent of the Central Jail said, “Gurpreet was lodged in the jail and was facing a trial in three cases of theft and robbery. Due to illness, he was admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital.”

Head warden Balkar Singh, warden Singara Singh and warden Kulwant Singh had made security arrangements.

On Monday around 6 am, the undertrial shifted to the medicine ward No. 3. Around 12.15 pm, Gurpreet complained of stomach pain and he was allowed to go to the toilet.

According to the on-duty jail staff, the undertrial broke open the handcuffs and fled away from the toilet.

The Assistant Superintendent said Gurpreet escaped due to the negligence of employees.

On a complaint of the jail authorities, a case has been registered against Balkar Singh, Singara Singh and Kulwant Singh at the Majitha road police station. No arrest has been made so far.
