Amritsar, May 21

The Upper Bari Doab (UBD) canal, supplying water to the Amrit Sarovar (pool of nectar) at the Golden Temple, has been crying for attention.

Former principal Kulwant Singh Ankhi said, “The UBD canal supplying water to the holy sarovar at the Golden Temple is badly polluted and needs to be cleaned on an urgent basis.”

“It was Guru Ramdas (fourth Sikh guru), who made arrangements to replenish the water of Amrit Sarovar from Ravi river,” he said.

Ankhi said that the condition of the UBD Canal has deteriorated with passage of time as the departments concerned have turned a blind eye towards its cleanliness. People usually throw garlands, polythene bags and other trash items into the UBD canal.

Another resident Mohan Singh said, “No signboard has been installed to urge people to refrain from throwing trash into it.”

SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said, “The SGPC has already installed a water filter plant at Sultanwind road, to clean the canal water before it is released in the Amrit Sarovar.”
