Tributes paid to martyrs on Police Commemoration Day

The city police and the Amritsar rural police paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the police and the paramilitary forces at separate programmes organised to mark Police Commemoration Day here on Monday.

Family members of the martyrs also participated in these programmes who were honoured by senior police officials with gifts.

After laying a wreath at the police memorial at the Police Lines here, Police Commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill informed that as many as 292 officers and jawans of the police and the paramilitary forces laid down their lives in the line of duty from September 1, 2018, to August 31, 2019. A team of women police, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Parwinder Kaur, paid homage to the martyrs.

The Police Commissioner said the Punjab Police were the only police force, which eliminated terrorism in the state and during the heyday of terrorism in Punjab, as many as 119 officials and jawans from the city police sacrificed their lives to bring peace in the region.

“I am feeling proud to be part of such a valiant force, which fought with bravery to end militancy in Punjab. On this day, we reiterate our resolve to fulfil the unfulfilled works of our jawans,” he said.

Amritsar Member of Parliament Gurjit Aujla, former Punjab minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla, Deputy Commissioner Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon, Deputy Commissioners of Police Harinderjit Singh, Jagmohan Singh, Gaganajit Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police and ACPs, SHO and chowki in-charges, among others, paid tributes to the martyrs.

Meanwhile, the Amritsar rural police, headed by Inspector General (Border Range)  SPS Parmar and SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal, paid tributes at the police memorial at the Amritsar Rural Police Lines at Daburji. They observed a two-minute silence. After paying tributes, they honoured the family members of the martyrs and officials and passed the necessary instructions.

Ex-minister rues no pension for cops 

• Former Punjab minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said though the government claimed to remember their martyrs, but when it came to look after their well being, they apparently dragged their feet.
• She said for the past three years, the candidates recruited in the police department were getting a meagre salary of Rs 10,000 per month and they had to work 24X7 to maintain law and order in the state. “How can they serve honestly and diligently on an empty stomach,” she pointed out. She said they should be given the full pay.
• She said in 2004, the Union Government had amended pension rules and stopped the pension of the paramilitary forces and the police jawans after retirement. “It is irony that the jawans who fought for the country in extreme weather conditions were deprived of the pension,” she added.

Martyrs remembered in Tarn Taran

Tarn Taran: The police martyrs, who sacrificed their lives while on duty, were paid rich tributes on Commemoration Day on Monday.  Representatives of all sections of society, besides family members of the martyrs, took part in the programme in a large number. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal, SSP Dhruv Dahiya , SP (headquarters) and SP (investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia spoke on the occasion and assured families of the martyrs of all needed help. Photos of martyrs were paid floral tributes by the officials. Families of the martyrs were given token of affection. — OC
