Amritsar, May 31

Industrialists in the city have expressed resentment over prolonged delays in desilting of the drain at the Focal Point area on the GT road.

Over 400 factories and thousands of workers are engaged in manufacturing of yarn, textile, hardware tools, fans and other goods.

Darshan Singh Goraya, an industrialist, said, “It’s high time for the authorities concerned to start desilting of the main Ganda Nullah with super suction machines. It is necessary to carry out desilting before the onset of monsoon for smooth and uninterrupted water disposal for over 400 industrial units.”

Kamal Damia, chairman, Focal Point Industries Association, said, “Desilting of the main drain has not been done for more than a decade. Consequently, water disposal in the area is not working efficiently, leading to overflow of sewerage lines at many points.”

He even shot off a communiqué to the MC, requesting it to carry out the desilting.

Immediate desilting will help the industrial units at the Focal Point as well as residential colonies, located right from Focal Point to Dhapai Road, get water disposed of, he added.

An MC official, who didn’t wish to be named, said a bill of approximately Rs 5.75 crore for cleaning the Ganda Nullah from Focal Point to Dhapai Road had already been passed in the MC House.
