Theatre workshops set to begin in city

Come summers, the annual edition of the month-long theatre workshops by prominent theatre personalities begin. Leading the summer drama club, Punjab Sangeet Natak Academy’s workshops for child artistes as well as its NSD workshop for young artistes across the region will bring in alumni from the illustrious institute in Delhi.

Kewal Dhaliwal, who conducts the workshop, says, “This workshop has become one of the most awaited and prominent theatre activities in the city. We receive entries from as far as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, while artistes from all parts of Punjab and Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir too come to participate.” The workshop includes imparting skills on various techniques in street-plays, mono-acts, realistic acting, sterilised acting and voice and speech production.

Theatre director and NSD alumnus Rajendra Singh too takes up summer theatre workshop for the children of Chief Khalsa Orphanage as well as other institutions, imparting skills to children from under-privileged backgrounds as a means of skill development. Gurinder Makana, another theatre director, runs a theatre workshop for children belonging to city’s underbelly, drug abuse afflicted areas, including Maqboolpoora colony and other slums. His street theatre workshops have earlier too focused on educating and rehabilitating children through theatre and performing arts.
