EGS/AIE/STR Teachers' Union, Punjab, held a protest against the state government at Ram Bagh on Saturday.

Union president Gagan Rani, while addressing mediapersons, said, “This is a beginning of our agitation. We are fighting for our rights. The government has been playing games with us since 2003. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had promised us before Assembly elections that they will implement basic pay for us. He has been in power for over an year, but we have not been able to meet him.”

She said, “We are being paid Rs 5,000, sometimes Rs 2,5 00. There is a constant fear of being transferred. Our salary should be at least Rs 10,300 with job regularisation."

The union members also stated that School Education Minister OP Soni was not paying attention to their demands. They said they would intensify their agitation if demands were not met.
