Amritsar, October 14

The food wing of the district Health Department on Monday seized a huge quantity of ‘petha’ and ‘son papdi’ being manufactured in unhygienic conditions from an unlicensed manufacturing unit in Bharat Nagar area.

District Health Officer Dr Charanjit Singh said 110 kg of ‘petha’ and 63 kg of ‘son papdi’ were seized. The department has also sent samples of seized products for testing.

Officials stated that the factory unit had applied for a licence but approval was yet not granted. “The unhygienic conditions seen at the manufacturing area were the basis for seizure. Food businesses are required to follow guidelines regarding cleanliness and hygiene,” said Dr Singh.

Team members stated that the manufacturing area was not properly secured and waste was seen scattered all around. Even cooks had not worn any gloves or head gears. The team also took notice of unclean utensils being used.

Dr Singh said a notice has been served on owners and products would be destroyed on receipt of report from the laboratory. The team had collected eight samples of milk products from various dairy units in the city on Sunday. — TNS
