Surge in BJP vote in urban segments

Though Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla defeated BJP leader Hardeep Singh Puri, a glance at the data reveals that the BJP has gained in all five urban Assembly segments in terms of number of votes its candidates had got in the 2017 Assembly elections.

On the contrary, the number of votes polled in favour of all four seats contested by the SAD in the rural segment has further gone down.

Even the urban constituency, Amritsar South, contested by SAD candidate, has seen an increase in the number of votes as compared to 2017 elections. The Congress votes have gone down in all these five urban constituencies.

The steep fall has been seen in the Amritsar East constituency, represented by Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. In 2017, the Congress had got 60,477 votes, but it managed to get only 44,585 this time.

Even in the Central constituency, represented by Education Minister OP Soni, the number of Congress votes has decreased by 11,588. The party has however got more votes in Rajasani represented by Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria.

Interestingly, BJP candidate got lead only in the Majitha constituency represented by former minister Bikram Singh Majitha. The BJP has lost in the remaining eight segments. This time, it has got only 9,933 votes more than the Congress in Majitha. In 2017 elections, the margin of the SAD victory over Congress was 22,884 votes. In Assembly elections, the Majitha constituency had polled 65,803 votes in favour of the SAD while now it recorded only 52,274 votes. In Ajanla, Rajasansi and Attari constituencies, the SAD votes in comparion to 2017 elections have gone down by 10,831, 15,956 and 6,322, respectively.
