The residents’ society in Sunder Nagar here has come up with a new idea to check the problem of littering in the area under which three CCTV cameras have been installed.

Residents stated the cameras were installed with a view to identify the people who threw waste on the roadsides. An area resident said earlier when they did not have cameras, people were reluctant to admit their fault.

“Now, we have the cameras to identify a person if he or she throws waste on the roadside. After that, we visit the person and counsel him about the problem. It has helped in solving the problem to a great extent,” said the resident.

The president of the society, Raman Kumar, said the cameras had been installed with the help of the contributions made by the residents. “Some people used to throw garbage on the road during the night. In the morning, nobody would admit to his mistake. With cameras in place, such elements are under a watch,” he said.

He added that the cameras would also help in creating a better law and order situation in the area. The civil and police administration, too, had plans to instal cameras in the city in view of the increasing crime.

However, the residents of Sunder Nagar have shown a way by resorting to community participation in checking the problem of littering in their area.
