The death of Nirmal Singh (27), a resident of Sultanwind village, two weeks ago, which the police initially thought to be a suicide case, has turned out to be a murder. After conducting a thorough probe, the police have registered a murder case against his wife and paramour for allegedly strangling him to death.

They have been identified as Sajan and Sumanpreet Kaur, wife of Nirmal, of Sultanwind village. The deceased was a cousin of Sajan. The police said the accused were yet to be arrested.

When the death of Nirmal Singh came to light, his wife told the police that he had been an acute alcoholic. His family had stated that he was alone at home while his wife had gone for work at the time of the incident.

The deceased was married around a year ago and had a child. The incident had come to light when a neighbour came to his house for some work and found him lying in bed with a duppatta tied around his neck.

Sultanwind SHO Neeraj Kumar said that the police found the matter suspicious as the family claimed that the deceased had got himself strangulated with a dupatta which was not at all possible. “Therefore, the police started working on different theories. The postmortem examination also confirmed strangulation. During investigation, it came to light that Sumanpreet had developed illicit relations with Sajan. The accused will be arrested soon,” he said.

Prabhjot Kaur, deceased’s sister, stated to the police that also suspected murder as the accused had illicit relations. “A day before the incident, Sumanpreet had a quarrel with Nirmal and they had also called Sajan,” she told the police.

A case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against them. Earlier, the police had initiated action under criminal procedure code.
