Amritsar, February 18

Even as the rural police are yet to take any action in connection with the suicide attempt case in which a married man tried to end his life by consuming poisonous substance, his wife has rubbished his allegations.

Vijaypal, a resident of Gaggomahal village, live-streamed his suicide attempt by consuming sulphas tablets here on Friday. He alleged that he his in-laws had been harassing him.

He consumed poison live on Facebook, a social networking site, when one of his relatives in Hoshiarpur was watching him online. He immediately informed his brother Pappu who rushed to his house. Getting no response from inside, he broke open the door and rushed him to a private hospital.

He said he was married to Rekha, a resident of Krishna Nagar, in 2000. The couple has two children.

Meanwhile, Rekha and her family members today termed the allegations baseless. She alleged that her husband was an alcoholic. “He used to physically assault me and children after consuming liquor. I have been living with my parents for the past several years. Even as a local court had asked Vijaypal to give me a part of his earnings for children, but he never did so,” she said.

She alleged on February 10, he came to the house and created a scene while threatening to implicate her and her family in a case by ending his life. She said her family immediately lodged a complaint with the Mohkampura police. “But the police did not take any action. Later, we filed our complaint on 181 helpline,” she said.

The Mohkampura police said it was recording the statement of Vijaypal following the complaint filed by Rekha.

Vipin Kumar, SHO, Ramdass police station, said the victim was yet to record his statements with the police. He said action would be taken accordingly.

Vijaypal runs a canteen at Government Senior Secondary School, Gaggomahal village. After school hours, he used sell eggs to make his both ends meet.
