The district administration on Friday held a meeting with school principals, Nehru Yuva Kendra in-charges and officials of various other departments requesting them to work in association with Drug Abuse Prevention Officers (DAPO) in villages to fight against the drug menace.

Presiding over the meeting, Nitish Singla, Sub-divisional Magistrate, Amritsar I, said the government has appointed over 42,000 DAPOs in the district. These officers have been trained by master trainers and they would help the addicts in getting treatment at nearby de-addiction centres, he said.

Singla said volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendras and school students should join hands in the fight. He asked the school principals to make students aware about the harmful effects of drug abuse during the morning prayer sessions at schools.

The SDM also asked the health officials to check the quality of milk products and other food items to ensure better health of residents. Singla also asked Block Development Officer Jandiala to run a cleanliness drive in the township and get dustbins installed at convenient places.
