The trend of students of Classes XI and XII taking coaching classes is on the rise. The sole purpose of higher secondary education has turned out to be cracking the entrance exam rather than learning.

The students, especially of Classes XI and XII from medical and non-medical streams are seen devoting their crucial years to regular studies and coaching classes accompanied by heavy stress.

It is seen that some of them take admission in their school, but instead prefer to go to coaching classes during the same time. The tuition culture among students is on the surge in the recent years with a high level of competition. Some of the schools have come up arrangement in schedule to help child balance between coaching and their regular school.

“Students hardly go to school in these two years. These coaching classes at least make sure that the concepts of the child are clear. Considering the level of competition, these classes are compulsory. The parents are forced to invest money, both in the school admissions and coaching centres,” said Simple Bansal, a mother of class XII student. Educationists believe that students must utilize these years, and stress of competitive examination must be reduced.

Dr Neera Sharma, Principal, DAV Public School, said, “This coaching centre business was not prevalent like this earlier. It is in the recent past that there has witnessed a surge. Classes such as XI, XII are important, formative years for a child, but the entire idea has become to crack the entrance rather than enjoying the golden years of schooling.”

Dharamvir Singh, Principal, Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, GT Road said, “70% attendance is compulsory as per CBSE norms. The child is expected to attend school. We do not encourage any such kind of culture in our schools. If a child wants to go outside the city, but wishes to take dummy admission, we will not permit any such thing.”

“There is a stark difference between the levels of board examinations and competitive examination. The student needs time for self-study in such scenario. We provide detail study and also prepare them for board examination. This is the sole reason for decline of students in schools,” said a faculty of city-based coaching centre.
