Amritsar, January 6

Unidentified snatchers targeted a tourist near Hall Bazaar and an NRI woman in Putaligarh here on Saturday. The tourist lost Rs 20,000, two phones and some documents while the NRI lost 5,000 Australian Dollars and gold jewellery.

In the first case, a tourist from Mumbai, Meena Mishra, complained to the Division A police that she, along with her family, came to Golden Temple on Saturday. They were roaming in the city when two motorcycle-borne youths turned up outside Hall Gate. They snatched her handbag that contained Rs 20,000 in cash, two mobile phones, an Aadhar card, a Pan card, a debit card and some important documents. The accused fled toward the Sabji Mandi side. Investigation officer, ASI Sukhpal Singh said a case was registered under relevant sections and the matter was under investigation.

In the other case, Davinder Singh stated to the Cantonment police that his wife Amarjit Kaur, along with daughter-in-law Neelam Devi, was going from Putlighar to Labour Office Wali Gali in Putaligar Chowk area at around 8.30 pm on Saturday when they were targeted. He said an unidentified biker snatched Neelam Devi’s bag comprising two gold chains, 10 gold bangles and 5,000 Australian Dollars. After snatching the bag, they fled away in no time.

Narinder Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Cantonment police station, said, “A case under Section 379-B of the IPC has been registered against the accused. An investigation is going on.”

It is worth mentioning here that the city witnessed 327 cases of snatching last year. The police succeeded in cracking only 117 cases. A large number of such cases aren’t reported to the police by people.
