Amritsar, March 14

The SGPC organised a ‘gurmat’ programme at Gurdwara Manji Sahib Diwan Hall in Golden Temple complex last evening. SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal appealed to the Sikh community to observe gurpurbs and other ‘gurmat’ programmes according to the Nanakshahi Calendar Samat 549.

The calendar has been creating confusion among the Sikhs due to discrepancies in the dates of gurpurbs and other occasions as the same events fall twice a year.

“There are some anti-panthic forces trying to divide the community. The calendar released at the Akal Takht secretariat on March 5 should be taken into consideration for commemorating important Sikh occasions,” he said.

Actually, it’s an amended version of the original Nanakshahi calendar introduced in 2003, which was further amended in 2010. It was christened as Bikrami calendar. —TNS
