Amritsar, January 13

A meeting of representatives of backward classes, who are associated with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), was held at the south constituency here today.

The office-bearers of various caste-based associations demanded from SAD to nominate candidate from backward class (BC) as 70 per cent population in the area belonged to the category.

Akali leaders, including Navdeep Singh Goldi, Surinder Singh Sultanwind, Amarbir Singh Dot, Manmohan Singh Titu, Mukhtiyar Singh Khalsa, Pritapal Singh Lally, Harjinder Singh Sultanwind, Darshan Singh (SAD BC wing president) and Deep Singh Kambboj (director, Kamboj Welfare Board) participated in the meeting.

They unanimously demanded from senior SAD leaders to nominate candidate from the BC category for the welfare of their castes. The office-bearers claimed that people belonging to the BC category, including Ramgaria, Kamboj and Rajput, were in majority in the area. “So the candidate should belong to any one of these castes,” they added.

The leaders claimed that they had also taken up the matter with Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
