Amritsar, June 14

The victims of the 1984 riots on Thursday met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, apprising him of the “discriminatory” treatment given to them by the Congress-led state government.

The Jathedar assured them that the matter would be taken up with the government.

Under the banner of ‘1984 Sikh Kataleaam Peerat Welfare Society (Punjab)’, they said that at least 26,000 families were uprooted and shifted to different parts of Punjab.

Society president Surjit Singh said around 22,000 red identity cards were issued by the erstwhile SAD-BJP government between 2001-2010 and around 2,000 houses were constructed to rehabilitate them, but since the Congress government assumed the charge of the state, their identity cards were being reviewed and curtailed.
