Amritsar, February 16

The move to remove assistant education officers (AEO) from the offices of district education officers (secondary education) has not down well with the teaching fraternity. The state Education Department has asked the district education officers (DEOs) to send assistant education officers (sports) back to their schools.

Keshav Kohli, president, Unemployed PTI BPED MPED Union, Punjab, said, “The decision to abolish the post of AEO (sports) across Punjab will be detrimental to sports promotion.”

Ashwani Awasthi, leader of the Democratic Teachers’ Front, said, “There are other ways to fill sports vacancies. Abolishing a post is not a solution. This is an important post as AEOs are required to work throughout the year to ensure that the games are held in correct spirit.” DEO (Secondary Education) Salvinder Singh Samra said, “Yes, such orders have come. We have an AEO in our office on permanent basis. We have sent the required details to the officials concerned.” — TNS
