Despite resistance from vendors, the estate wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) has removed vends from the Mall road and Rani Ka Bagh in the last few days, declaring these no-vending zone. The anti-encroachment drive at Rani Ka Bagh has left the vendor’s union infuriated as they met met Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and urged him to stop the drive before allotting the vending zones.

Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia said that the drive would continue in the no vending zone. “The Mall road is one of the prominent roads in the city. It has turned into a coconut market where a large number of illegal vendors sell coconut water on the both sides of the road. We have removed the vends and declared it no-vending zone. Similarly, we have removed vends from Rani Ka Bagh,” he said.

According to Bhatia, residents of Rani Ka Bagh have hailed the MC drive. The campaign would continue in other areas too, he said.

The MC has been developing three vending zones to address encroachments in the city. Under a pilot project, the MC will make vending zones near the bus stand, railway station and Gurdwara Shaheedan Sahib. The Deputy Commissioner, Mayor and MC Commissioner identified locations for vending zones in the city recently.
