Amritsar, April 16
Members of the Kisan Sangharsh Committee on Monday held a sit-in at the office of Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Parampal Singh, demanding withdrawal of cases registered against farmers. They also raised slogans against the police.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, a farmer leader, said farmers were unnecessarily being “victimised” as many cases were registered against them at different police stations of the district.
After the Congress assumed power in the state, about 40 per cent of the drug peddlers and smugglers arrested by the police were released as the police failed to file challans, he claimed.
The protesters also sought de-politicisation of the police force and expressed resentment over crime against women in the country. They hoped that their demands would be addressed
They ended their protest after the SSP assured them that the list of registered FIRs filed in different police station of Amritsar (rural) would be verified. In addition, their policy related demands would be forwarded to the state government.
