The Amritsar rural police have booked a doctor of a private hospital in Rayya for “negligence” due to which a pregnant woman lost his life here on Wednesday evening. The case was registered after family members of the deceased staged a protest outside the hospital.

Puran Singh, a resident of Patti Nangali Mehta Chowk, stated to the police that his wife Sonia (24) experienced labour pain so she was admitted to the Civil Hospital at Baba Bakala. He said doctors suggested for caesarean section so he took her to a private hospital in Rayya.

He alleged after admitting the patient, Dr Gurbinder Singh went to his house and the nurses at the hospital started treating her. Her condition became critical soon. He along with his relative went to Dr Gurbinder’s house and urged him to come to the hospital. “But he did not come. After some time, I went to call him again following which he came and took her to operation theatre. During the surgery, Sonia, along with her child in the womb, died,” Puran Singh said.

This led to a protest by the family members who alleged that it was due to the negligence of the doctor that Sonia and her baby died. The Beas police reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitators. Later, they registered a case against the doctor for “negligence”. The bodies were later handed over to the family members after postmortem examination.
