Amritsar, May 18

An NGO, Amritsar Vikas Manch, has opposed the proposal regarding shifting of Pandit Motilal Nehru Municipal Library from the Town Hall to the District Courts Complex. There is a proposal to convert the library building at the Town Hall into a Food Street.

Charanjit Singh Gumtala of the AVM said the decision of the administration was condemnable. The NGO has written to Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mayor Karmajit Singh Rintu, Education Minister Om Parkash Soni and MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, demanding preservation of the library as a city heritage.

“A portion of the Town Hall building has been converted into the Partition Museum. The library should be opened for visitors to the Partition Museum. Its shifting to district courts will keep it away from the reach of general public,” he said. The AVM also opposed the conversion of the library building into a cafeteria. — TNS
