Pathankot, October 14

Army Public School, Mamun Cantonment, organised a go-green rally on the school campus in which 250 students of Class VIII took part.

Principal Reena Panta said, “The Go Green Initiative is a grassroots environmental programme that unites parents, teachers and students to create a culture of conservation on the school campus. It also helps educate students and other stakeholders to be more environmentally conscious. As more and more schools go green, students are being given the opportunity to learn firsthand the impact of using environment-friendly tools, like jute and paper bags.”

The event was held under the guidance of school patron Maj General K Narayanan and chairman Brig HS Vandra.

The disadvantages of using polythene bags and the benefits of utilising jute and paper bags were also discussed.

Students were told how paper bags offered many eco-friendly benefits.“Paper bags can be continually used. They are both recyclable and biodegradable. They are made from a renewable natural resource, can be used repeatedly and can be shipped to a paper mill and remade into new paper. On the other hand, the use of plastics and polythene bags causes immense damage to the environment. Plastics used in packaging food stuff meant for human consumption contain harmful compounds. They are also non-biodegradable and hence take decades to decay. Moreover, plastic bags are not renewable which means they can't be easily recycled like paper bags,” averred Reena Panta.
