A notorious criminal managed to slip from the police custody from outside police station D-Division here on Wednesday evening.

The police have booked an assistant sub inspector (ASI) Kawaljit Singh and head constable (HC)Shiv Dutt for dereliction of duty, besides accused Nitin Nahar of Indira Colony.

Nahar was nabbed by the Gate Hakima police in connection with a case registered with the local police, in which he had badly injured a person in the month of July. He has been on the run since them. The police had recovered weapons and ammunition from his possession. He was sent to one-day police remand by the local court.

According to information, the Gate Hakima police station did not have any lock up. He was taken to Division D police station lock up under the supervision of ASI Kawaljit Singh and HC Shiv Dutt. Sub Inspector (SI) Balwinder Singh stated to the police that in gross negligence, they opened the handcuffs of the accused and taking the advantage of this, he slipped away from outside the Division D police station.

The police have registered a case under Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC against them and both have been placed under suspension.

Earlier, Nahar was arrested with illegal weapons and lodged in jail where he allegedly came in contact with gangsters, the police revealed. He was currently on bail.
