Amritsar, June 19

Ahead of this year’s monsoon, the district administration held a meeting with the officials concerned of various departments for flood preparedness here on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh Dhillon said the objective of the meeting was to supervise the arrangements for dealing with a flood-like situation in the district. He said the departments were asked to prepare themselves to carry out rescue works in flood-vulnerable areas adjoining two rivers — Ravi and Beas — besides low level areas where rainwater tend to accumulate during rainy season.

He instructed the sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) of Ajnala and Baba Bakala from where the Ravi and Beas rivers pass to make plans to ensure safety and security of the people living near these rivers.

He directed officials to keep a watch over the cleaning and desilting of drains in a time-bound manner. He asked the officials to prepare a list of vulnerable villages and identify the places where they could be shifted in emergency. — TNS
