A man died in a road mishap near Jethuwal village here on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Singh (40), a resident of Sundar Nagar village, Meerankot Chowk.

Sukhwinder Singh, father of the deceased, said Ranjit was going from Amritsar to Batala and Gurdaspur as per daily routine. He worked for a private firm which dealt in delivery of parcels and other courier services. On Tuesday when he reached near Anand College at Jethuwal village, an unknown truck driver applied brakes all of a sudden in the middle of the road. Behind the truck was Ranjit Singh, who was driving a mini canter. Due to sudden halt of the truck, Ranjit’s vehicle collided with the truck, resulting in his death on the spot.

The police have registered a case under Sections 304-A, 279 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unknown truck driver. Paramjit Singh, investigating officer, said an investigation was under way to identify the accused truck driver who fled the scene leaving the truck behind. He will be arrested soon, the police said.
