Seven booked for poll violence

Gurmej Singh of Ghurkwind village, 40 km from here, was attacked by a group of persons when he was returning after casting his vote in the village on Sunday. The assailants allegedly made caste-based remarks against him. The complainant alleged that they also removed his turban. Poll-related rivalry is said to be the reason behind the assault.

Seven assailants of the same village have been booked under Sections 295, 506, 323, 148,149 of the IPC and relevant sections of the SC/ST Act by the Kacha Pakka police. The police said the accused were identified as Sukhwinder Singh, his son Raghbir Singh besides Sawant Singh, Gurjant Singh, Rachhpal Singh, Gurpal Singh and Jagir Singh.

Gurmej Singh mentioned in his complaint to the police that the accused surrounded him in the evening hours when he was his way to his home after casting his vote from a polling station. — OC
