Murder accused flees from hospital

A murder accused identified as Kuljit Singh, a resident of Kirpal Colony on Majitha Road, escaped from the police custody from the Civil Hospital here on Tuesday. He was brought to the hospital from Amritsar central jail for medical checkup.

It is learnt that he went to washroom on the pretext of answering the nature’s call. He later pushed the cop deputed to guard him and fled towards Rambagh railway crossing near the hospital.

The police have booked him under Sections 223, 224 and 225 of the IPC, while raids were on at suspected places to arrest him.

As per details, he has been in the jail for the past three years on charges of murder. He had allegedly injured Chand Singh seriously, who later succumbed to his injuries. The police have arrested and lodged him in jail.

On Tuesday, he was brought to the Civil Hospital for medical checkup. Constable Ranjit Singh of Tarn Taran police was deputed to guard him. Ranjit told police officials that the accused was handcuffed. He asked to use the washroom. Ranjit said while coming out he pushed him and he fell in the bathroom. He later bolted the door and fled. Though, the other cops at the Civil Hospital chased him but he dodged them at the railway crossing and slipped away.
