The District Congress Committee and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a student wing of the party, staged a protest to mark the completion of four years of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre.

District Congress (Urban) president Jugal Kishore Sharma along with several leaders burnt an effigy of the BJP at the Hall Gate Chowk. He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made several promises in the last four years but nothing concrete is there to show so he runs away from being questioned.”

The NSUI members were led by president Akshay Sharma at the Circuit Chowk.

The Congress had given a call for a nationwide protest that they termed as ‘Vishwasghat Diwas’. The protesters said the policies of the Central Government were “ill-conceived”. They said the government had failed on all fronts. They blamed the Centre for rising prices, unemployment, hike in fuel prices and communal tension in the country.

Meanwhile, the police detained NSUI state president along with a few protesters who were trying to gherao the BJP state chief’s house.

Akshay also blamed the Centre for allegedly dividing students on religious lines. Major institutions like JNU, Delhi University and Jamia Milia have seen student clashes at the behest of BJP, he said.

“Students will never let anyone alter the secularity of the educational institutions,” he added. The detainees were released later.
