MGNREGA: District first in Majha

AMRITSAR: The district has ranked first in Majha region and 12th in the state for providing employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA).

The district has ranked first in Majha region and 12th in the state for providing employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA). Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shivdular Singh Dhillon said 6.86 lakh days of employment had been provided to people for which Rs 23.82 crore was disbursed.

While gave the credit to his predecessor Kamaldeep Singh Sangha and former additional deputy commissioner Ravinder Singh, both of whom have been transferred recently. Dhillon said that in 2016, the district was at the bottom of the ranking chart. “It was Sangha who ran a drive and issued 1.11 lakh job cards and enabled 22,800 families get employment under the scheme,” he said.

Dhillon said that under the MGNREGA, 24 beautiful parks have been constructed in rural areas. The work on another 30 is undergoing and it would be completed soon, he said. The MGNREGA has also helped in construction of 153 playgrounds, 321 cattle sheds and nine fish firms. He said 15 plant nurseries were also being managed under the scheme. The DC said his priority would be to continue the scheme with the same vigour.
