Man held for providing drugs to undertrial

The Peshi Cell of the local court complex nabbed a youth who was supplying drugs to a jail inmate when the latter was about to board the Central Jail vehicle after a court hearing yesterday.

The accused has been identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Sheru, of Guru Ki Wadali in Chheharta. The police have also booked the jail inmate, identified as Ranjit Singh, alias Rinku, of the same locality.

Kashmir Singh, in-charge of the Peshi Cell, said Ranjit was brought for hearing in connection with a theft case registered by the Chheharta police. He said when the accused was boarding the bus at gate number 1, Sheru gave him a polythene bag. When they checked it, they found 12-gm charas in it.

He was apprehended and handed over to the court complex police where a case under Sections 20, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered.

Chandar Mohan, in-charge of the court complex police post, said investigation was on to ascertain where did the accused procured the contraband from. “We will interrogate Sheru and conduct raids to nab the drug peddler,” he added.
