In a shocking incident, a mentally challenged 18-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a shopkeeper in the Majitha area here. The incident occurred on Monday while a case was registered on Thursday after the police found certain clues in the case with the help of CCTV cameras installed in the area.

The police have launched a manhunt to nab the suspect identified as Sunil, a resident of Khasa Patti in Majitha.

The police have lodged an FIR under Sections 363 and 376 of the IPC on the statement of victim’s grandmother. She stated to the police that her granddaughter was mentally challenged since her birth. She said on Monday she had gone to grocery shop for buying some goods but did not return home for a long time. Worried over this, she located her in a village. She said when they repeatedly asked her, the victim signalled that she was subjected to rape by the accused.

Bhupinder Kaur, investigating officer, said as the matter was sensitive and the victim was mentally challenged, we first get the matter investigated. In the CCTV cameras installed in the village we found the accused following and take her away. The victim also hinted through her gestures that she was sexually abused by Sunil.

As per details, the teenage girl was brought up by her grandmother after her parents abandoned knowing her mental conditions. The police said her parents were also informed about the incident who also came in her support. The medical examination of the girl was also being conducted, while we are taking opinion for getting her statement recorded before the judicial magistrate.

SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal said the matter was very serious and shocking therefore without any further delay we registered a case. He said the accused would be arrested soon. — TNS
