Amritsar, August 17

The martyrdom day of Madan Lal Dhingra was observed at Town Hall on Friday morning. The Amar Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra Memorial Committee paid homage and garlanded the recently-installed statue of the martyr in the Heritage Street.

The programme was attended by Local Bodies’ Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, along with many politicians and bureaucrats, including former health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla. The office-bearers of the committee also expressed grief over the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

On this occasion, Laxmi Kanta Chawla said martyr Madan Lal Dhingra was born in a rich family. After completing his study in Lahore, he went to England to do engineering. He came in contact with Veer Savarkar and other revolutionaries. In London, Dhingra found that an intelligence officer, Curzon Wyllie, was keeping a vigil on Indian students, repeatedly insulting them.

In July 1909, he shot Curzon Wyllie in a programme.

Students from various schools attended the function. IG Kuwar Vijay Pratap Singh, ADCP Jagjit Singh Walia and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the legendary figures were also remembered by a number of social organisations in the city.
