Amritsar, June 24

Regarded as one of the best commercial markets of the city, the popular Lawrence Road lacks basic cleanliness, as banned polythene bags, waste material from houses as well as from the shops can be seen lying here on either sides of the road.

Not only the commercial market, but even the adjoining residential areas such as Brhamnagar and the Police Lines have no different story to tell, as garbage heaps can be seen on the sides of the lanes, clearly pointing a finger towards the authorities who seem to be clueless about the situation. The entire stretch from the Nehru Shopping Complex is in a terrible state.

The Lawrence extension road is also facing the same issue. The area has a number of eating joints and the waste from the shops is thrown at the side of the road.

“It is a prominent market, it becomes dirty with a heavy footfall, so the authorities should come forward and keep it clean,” said Rishabh Arora, a resident of the city.

Claiming that it is the responsibility of the citizens as well as the authorities, Rajendra Sharma, a social worker, said, “People will have to join in in the efforts to keep the city clean. It has to be from both sides.”

Another prominent area, specifically residential areas such as the Police Lines, Officers Colony, becomes unclean with material from the garbage bins is overflowing from the bins, sometimes accumulating on the road.

Amit Kumar, who works in a private firm, said, “The residents have become used to such situations. I guess things will get better with time. The residents will have to keep up hope.”
