‘Humanity is my only religion’. ZEE5’s new series ‘Kaafir’, starring Dia Mirza and Mohit Raina, is introduced with a tagline that suggests its premise well. It is about an intense story of a Pakistan woman, who mistakenly crosses border into India and is kept in a detention camp and a lawyer, who is failed by the system and connects with this woman and her daughter and how all of their lives change.

“It’s a story of hope and struggle for one’s identity and the power of being a human first,” said Dia Mirza. The actor was in Amritsar, along with Mohit Raina, to promote the series and visit Wagah border.

‘Kaafir’ marks the digital debut of both actors and they feel that it is a story that is worth telling on OTT platform. “Kaafir brings in a strong content, a compelling story that needs to reach out to wider audience and OTT platforms give chance to go beyond borders and touch hearts,” says Mohit. Post URI success, Mohit said he was looking for potent stories to be a part of. “Uri was something that was unconventional in its approach and ‘Kaafir’ too is largely a story that has the potential of making an impact on society at large, not just take up a relevant subject. I believe that content is the king today and good work will definitely get appreciated.”

Dia, who was last seen in Sanju, said Kaafir was a personal journey of sorts. “Playing the protagonist ‘Kainnaaz’ was emotionally taxing and I cannot even imagine how a woman, on whose life the story is based, must have braved these incidents. It has changed everyone, who has been associated with the project.”

Excited to visit Wagah border for the first time, Dia also shared that it would be emotional for her to be there as being part of ‘Kaafir’ she has become more sensitive towards the definition of borders.
