The city railway station has invited students of the IIM, Amritsar, to study its different domains for their operations and management courses.

Amrit Singh, Officiating Director of the station, said, “After assuming the office here, I found some recurrent troubles which need to be addressed to ensure delivery of quality public services.”

Based on this experience, as many as eight different areas were identified and briefed to a batch of 60 students initially.

The first subject is to ensure punctuality of trains so that there should not be any wastage of time, neither for passengers, nor for railway officials. Cleanliness in trains and on platforms is must.

Information architecture requires to be developed. Under this head comes display boards, public address system, enquiry and navigation  boards for visitors at the railway station.

The fourth important domain is safety and security. Unlike metros in which only passengers with tickets can enter, railway stations across the country do not have similar system. Ticket booking, reservation windows, waiting hall and others form a domain for students to jot down details, troubles and suggest solutions.

Adequate infrastructure for differently-abled travellers is another significant area to be studied by students.

The eighth and the last domain for the students would be ‘keep performance indicator. These will be used to monitor the performances like how much is the queue time at ticket and enquiry windows.

IIM Assistant Prof Neeraj Bhanot said the study would carry weightage of 30 marks in operation management course for the MBA first year  students.
