The city police have booked five persons in connection with the murder of Kanwaljit Singh of Tej Nagar, who was stabbed here late on Sunday evening. A manhunt has been launched to nab the suspects, who are absconding.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia said Kanwaljit Singh and his friend Sikander had a heated argument with Rinku and Goldy of the same area. It was Rinku who reportedly stabbed Kanwaljit with his Sri Sahib (a knife-size sword kept as a religious symbol). They along with three other unknown persons had attacked both. Sikander had sustained serious injuries on his head.

The ADCP said the accused fled away in a car immediately after the incident. He said five separate police teams were dispatched to the possible hideouts of the accused. They would be arrested soon, he said.

Meanwhile, after the postmortem examination of the deceased’s body, family members staged a protest outside Division B police station, keeping the body in front of the gate. They demanded immediate arrest of the suspects.

Kanwaljit was married nine months ago. Since it was his first Lohri after marriage, his family had organised a celebration. He, along with Sikander Singh, had gone to the market to buy some necessary items. On the way, some people had lit bonfire in a street and gathered around it. The victims sought a way and this led to arguments. Kanwaljit was stabbed in his chest. The accused are said to have attacked Sikander with bricks on his head. He was rushed to a hospital.

The police are waiting for the postmortem report of the deceased. His body bore two injury marks. The fatal attack on chest apparently left his heart punctured.
