Amritsar, December 9

In one of its kinds, an all-women post office was inaugurated at Katra Sher Singh, Amritsar division, by MC Commissioner Komal Mittal on Monday.

The Katra Sher Singh post office is recognised as the first Mahila Dak Ghar. The post office has two counters, supported by female working staff. The post office remains open from 9 am till 5 in the evening.

Komal lauded the move of the post office. The Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Amritsar division, Hari Mohan, said: “This is a step towards women empowerment. We will extend the idea to other post offices. There are four staff members here, including a helper. These post offices have been chosen carefully.”

“We will promote our female-oriented schemes such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to attract women participation,” he added.

Sanjeev Chug, SP (headquarters), Amritsar Division; Senior Postmaster, Amritsar Head Post Office; and other staff members were also present on the occasion.

Notably, the first all-woman post office was opened at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, in 2013. In September this year, second all-women post office was opened at Patna. It was also announced then that each postal division would have one such post office.
