Hockey star gets rousing welcome

Baljit Kaur, member of the Indian hockey team that won silver medal in the Summer Youth Olympics 2018, received a warm welcome by the district administration here on Tuesday.

Baljit Kaur, a student of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Government Girls Senior Secondary School, has been practicing under the sports wing of the Punjab Institute of Sports (PIS) of the school.

She was received at the Guru Ram Das International Airport, Amritsar, late on Monday evening by school principal Reetal Gill and teachers. Later, she was taken to the city in a procession. Baljit was the lone member of the national hockey team from Punjab. Her friends, too, congratulated her for her feat.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sandeep Rishi were among those who honoured Baljit.

Earlier, hockey team members, including Baljit Kaur, were felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Delhi and were given Rs 1 lakh each. Besides, organisers of the Olympics Games in Argentina had also paid Rs 9 lakh each to the members of the team.
