High drama was witnessed when the Lawrence Road police held a person, identified as Sunil Dhawan, for allegedly creating a ruckus and a law and order situation on the road.
However, the police had to face embarrassment when they came to know that they had caught a wrong person while the actual accused had sped away taking advantage of the hasty action of the police.
According to information, a car hit a rickshaw-puller, Surinder Singh, of Pandori Waraich on Lawrence Road and sped away towards the Novelty chowk. Several persons, who were riding a bike, followed the car and intercepted it near the chowk. One of the riders, Sunil Dhawan, was having a hockey stick, as he was having some problem in his leg.
However, the Lawrence Road police mistook him as the real culprit and dragged him to the chowki. Taking advantage of this, the suspect and the car driver sped away. Meanwhile, people came to the support of the person held in the chowki. Rakesh Kumar, in charge, Lawrence Road police chowki, verified the claims from the CCTV cameras.
He later noted down the car number which was traced and recovered. The car belonged to a professor of Guru Nanak Dev University which was being driven by his minor son, a student of DAV Public School, on Lawrence Road. They were summoned to the police chowki. They were later let off after reprimand and compensating the rickshaw-puller.
