Amritsar, September 23

The Health Department has asked the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to supply uninterrupted electricity in the areas where it had cold storage facilities for keeping polio immunisation medicines.

Officials of the department asked the power corporation to ensure uninterrupted supply from September 24 to September 27. The three-day polio immunisation drive in the district will start from September 25.

The request was made during a meeting of the district task force for control of polio here yesterday. The meeting was attended by senior medical officers and medical officers of health facilities, besides representatives of the PSPCL, the Police Department, Armed forces and the Education Department.

Deputy Medical Commissioner, Dr Prabhdeep Kaur, said they had asked all departments to ensure cooperation so that each and every child aged under five years was immunised. She said though no new case of polio was reported from the past many years, the department was conducting immunisation drives regularly to completely wipe out the virus.

“As the neighbouring Pakistan has not yet been able to check spread of polio and Amritsar being a border district, the department is not ready to take any chances,” she added.

District immunisation officer, Dr Bharti Dhawan, said all preparations for the drive were complete. She said officials of the power corporation had been given location of cold storage facilities. They had assured full cooperation, she added. — TNS
