Amritsar, September 8

As International Literacy Day being celebrated across the globe, residents feel that there is a need to promote importance of literacy among people, improving infrastructure of government schools for right public education.

The day is recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Indu Arora, a former educationist and member of the non-governmental organisation (NGO), Voice of Amritsar, said, “Education is right of every child. A nation can only move forward and prosper on global platform, if the very fabric of the country is well equipped in knowledge and academics. We need to strengthen students of government schools, which are lacking in basic facilities. There must be stress on healthy food and encouragement to kids.”

Neera Sharma, Principal, DAV Public School, highlighted the requirement of empowering government schools, formulating policies to promote literacy. “I have been ensuring education of teaching and supporting staff. We also run a school for special children. There is a need that policies are formed to enhance education system, as well as government schools. The government schools can be mentored by private schools for their holistic development.

Social activist Swaraj Grover added, “The nation’s education sector has been progressing over the period of time. Focus should be on women education, to make sure that female residing in every nook and corner should be literate. Moral values must be made part of the syllabus.”
