Finally, Government Medical College here is all set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for starting the Cath Lab set up here around six months ago.

Though the college had set up the lab, it had failed to function in the absence of trained manpower. The college authorities stated that the process for selection of experts was started, but it was mired in litigation after a few of the aspirants went to the court.

The college authorities stated that now the PGI had offered to help the college in starting the lab and it had also offered to train the manpower. The college principal said that a list of shortlisted candidates who would be sent to the PGI for training had been prepared.

“We would be sending the list of six employees by Friday. As and when the manpower is trained, the services for the general public would be started,” he said.

The college authorities stated that PGI officials had also offered to send their own faculty to the Cath Lab on a temporary basis to impart training to the employees.

The GMC principal, Dr BS Bal, said the MoU with the PGI would be signed soon and the facility would be started as soon as the training work is completed.

Now, as the government too has capped the prices of stunts at Rs 30,000, the Cath Lab could have been of immense help for the patients undergoing such surgeries. The insiders in the medical profession stated that the capping the prices of stunts had not helped patients undergoing treatment at private facilities.
