The authorities concerned at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH), associated with Government Medical College here have planned to rope in the nursing staff to ensure cleanliness.

The issue of cleanliness at the hospital has been one of the issues highlighted by Lok Sabha member Gurjeet Singh Aujla during his repeated surprise checks at the institute. Even residents have several times pointed out the poor sanitation in and around the hospital.

Officials said though more safai sevaks were needed for cleanliness, it is being felt that amid manpower and infrastructure constraints focus should be on creating awareness and sensitising patients and staff to sanitation issues.

Officials feel lack of awareness among attendants of patients at the hospital is one of the major reasons behind poor sanitation. After having meals, wrappers are often thrown out of windows by patients. If the authorities can motivate people to use dustbins, which already are available in the wards, the problem can be solved to a great extent.

Dr Shiv Charan, Officiating Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said a meeting of the nursing heads of the wards had been called to discuss the issue.

“Since the nursing staff remain present in the wards round the clock, we are planning to seek their help to motivate people to use dustbins,” he added.
