Vikram Singh, president of the Students’ Union, Guru Nanak Dev University College, Patti, and his three other associates were injured when their rival group opened firing at them outside the college on Monday. A rift over the proposed students body elections is said to be the reason behind the incident.
SHO Rajesh Kakkar said along with Vikram Singh, Dharminder Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Kishan were injured. A case under Sections 307, 323, 148, 149 of the IPC, and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act have been registered against five, he said.
The accused have been identified as Janoon, Maula, Kokan, Manna and Satta, all students of the college.
The students of both groups had a verbal duel on the college premises. When they came out of the college, the accused opened fire at them. The injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Patti, where their condition is stated to be out of danger.
