A resident of Rataul village, 10 km from here, sustained bullet injuries during an assault two days ago. The victim has been identified as Gurdial Singh. A tussle, which arose during the last panchayat elections, is said to be the reason behind the firing incident.

The accused are Manjinder Singh, his brothers Jarnail Singh and Baljit Singh, besides Lakhwinder Singh, Major Singh and Nirvail Singh. They have been booked under Sections 307, 506, 148, 149 of the IPC, and 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms Act.

Gurdial Singh mentioned in his police complaint that he, along with his son Dharamvir Singh, was returning home on a bike on August 15 when the accused fired at him. Gurdial Singh sustained a bullet injury while his son had a narrow escape. The accused are absconding, said ASI Naresh Kumar, investigating officer.

The complainant said the accused had lost the panchayat elections for the position of sarpanch due to which they had kept a grudge.
