Amritsar, December 17

A number of experts on Monday stressed on the sustainable urbanisation, environmental and planning issues in an interdisciplinary seminar on ‘Sustainable Urbanization, Environmental and Spatial Planning Concerns’ inaugurated at Guru Nanak Dev University at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC).

A large number of university and college teachers, including research scholars from Punjab and other states of the country are participating to be concluded on December 19. The seminar is being conducted under the aegis of the Faculty Development Centre (FDC).

Prof PSN Rao, Director, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, presided over the inaugural session. Rao, in his inaugural address, emphasised on adapting the traditional ancient Indian way of life in the contemporary era in order to make the fast increasing urbanisation more sustainable. Sharing his views regarding the utility of participating in such programmes, he said, “Accident go a long way in augmenting the expertise of the teaching fraternity, irrespective of the length of their careers, as he opined that the learning had always been a life-long phenomenon.”

Prof Ashwani Luthra of GRD School of Planning and the Coordinator apprised the participants of the genesis of the theme of the seminar ‘Sustainable Urbanisation, Environmental and Spatial Planning Concerns’, which, he said, covers a number of academic disciplines.

Dr Kiran Sandhu, head, Guru Ram Das School of Planning, highlighted the relevance of the theme of the seminar. Prof Adarsh Pal Vig, director, in his welcome address, rued that in the hot pursuit of the economic development all over the world, the sustainable development had been relegated to the background.
